The maps produced through this effort are often referred to as the ‘red’ and ‘black’ maps and they record a pre-European, largely natural landscape. For convenience, I will refer to them here as the Black Maps. The Black Maps show the extent of wetlands and the locations of rivers and streams before they were modified. Paper copies of the original Black Maps were recently transferred to Archives New Zealand. Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu has taken high resolution digital photographs of many of the Black Maps, at significant cost and effort. We acknowledge and thank Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu for the amount of work and funding that they have put in towards digitising the Black Maps. We then created a series of GIS layers from the Black Maps. The layers here are the one Environment Canterbury have created.

During the mid to late 19th century, the Canterbury region was systemically surveyed.
